The land and it's surroundings
Mae Terra is located in the Serra da Estrela, Portugal's largest nature reserve. With its rugged mountains and green valleys in which the vegetation often still consists of deciduous forest. Many clear mountain streams wind their way through the landscape. The population in this region still lives partly self-sufficiently and this characterizes the landscape, many terraces on which gardens and orchards are maintained and where you can still see the shepherds roaming freely with their flocks.
Our Quinta
At our Quinta we are the grateful guardians of 5 hectares of land that is +-800 meters above sea level. We have classified about 1.5 hectares as cultivated land and consist of fertile old handmade terraces with granite walls. Here we grow our crops and the pastureland for our herd of goats. The rest of the land consists of wild woodland with magical old sweet chestnut trees and rock formations. Two clear mountain streams cross our land and provide many small waterfalls and keep our fields and terraces green in the summer. In addition to ourselves, our Quinta also has a herd of goats, chickens, 2 dogs, Findus the cat, and about 20 bee colonies. In the future, we would also like to have a donkey and some ducks. All animals have their own function and role within the dynamic system and are part of the closed cycle at our Quinta.
The surroundings
Many people are working on similar projects in the immediate vicinity. As a result, various activities are offered in the area: yoga classes, tai chi classes, shiatsu, Tai massage, sound healing, Kambo and other ceremonies, horseback riding, and babysitting.
In addition, the medieval neighborhood village of Linhares da Beira is definitely worth a visit with its idyllic houses and streets, the castle, and cafe Mimoso! Linhares is also known for paragliding. Furthermore, the area is characterized by the many hiking trails, the beautiful river Mondego and the mountain lake Vale do Rossim.
